DED is the Deferred Enforced Departure: it is a temporary immigration protection that allows: (1) undocumented persons to obtain social security with which they would obtain a work permit; and (2) they will be able to travel to their country in case of an emergency. DED was established as a vital tool within U.S. foreign policy. for the following reasons:
(1) to protect people from civil, political, and humanitarian crises in their countries of origin, and to protect those who face insecurity upon return to their countries;
(2) to further U.S. foreign policy. and other domestic interests in connection with the suspension of the deportation of persons.

DED is a measure granted by the President, unlike other types of semi-immigrant status.

Key points

  • Currently the only regions in the world that have DED are Liberia, Hong Kong and Venezuela.

  • DED protected persons are generally not subject to removal from the United States for a designated period.

  • The person with DED will have the opportunity to apply for a work permit, and request permission to leave the country for special circumstances.
  • DED would give 200,000 undocumented Colombians the opportunity to continue working and contributing to our communities without fear of deportation.

  • The DED is a humanitarian figure not very common within the U.S. immigration law, but it grants a work permit giving the opportunity to work legally.

  • DED is not a specific immigration status, it is only an immigration relief.
