The march carries forward a long tradition of Quaker activism. Historically, Quakers have taken part in peaceful protests to end wars and slavery, and have supported women’s suffrage, reflecting their deep commitment to justice and peace. More recently, earlier this year, Quakers sued the federal government over immigration agents’ authority to carry out arrests in places of worship.
The march organizers state that their protest aims to show solidarity with migrants and other groups targeted by President Donald Trump’s administration.

“I just have to take one step after another to move toward something better—something truer to what the Quakers who came before us envisioned for this country, and to what people saw in the American experiment, the American dream.”
Jess Hobbs Pifer, organizor of the march.
